Dr Naomi Hawkins visits University of Queensland and University of Melbourne, Australia

Dr Hawkins was awarded an Outward Mobility Academic Fellowship by the University of Exeter, which allowed her to travel to the University of Queensland and the University of Melbourne in October 2018, to build on existing collaborative research relationships at both institutions.

From 22 to 25 October, Dr Naomi Hawkins was a visiting scholar at the TC Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia. The purpose of her visit was to strengthen the research relationship between Exeter Law School and the TC Beirne School of Law, particularly in the field of science, technology and law. She was hosted by Professor Brad Sherman and colleagues in the Law, Science and Technology Group. Dr Hawkins met with academics from across the University of Queensland, working in disciplines as diverse as genetics, computer science, media and cultural studies, communication and the Global Change Institute, as well as the Law School. It is hoped that this visit will be the start of an ongoing collaborative relationship, between the Law, Science and Technology group at Queensland and the Science, Culture and the Law (SCuLE) research group at Exeter. Dr Mathilde Pavis, also a member of SCuLE, will take up a visiting fellowship at TC Beirne School of Law at the University of Queensland in early 2019. During her visit, Dr Pavis will focus on the intersection of artificial intelligence and copyright.

Dr Naomi Hawkins also visited Professor Jane Kaye and colleagues at HeLEX@Melbourne, Melbourne Law School, at the University of Melbourne. Dr Hawkins is a research associate at HeLEX, the Centre for Health Law and Emerging Technologies at the University of Oxford. Her research interests in intellectual property law and medical law in emerging health technologies complement those of HeLEX, and she collaborates with colleagues at HeLEX.

HeLEX@Melbourne was established in October 2017, and Professor Kaye holds a joint appointment at Melbourne and Oxford. This was Dr Hawkins’s first visit to HeLEX@Melbourne, and she enjoyed meeting new colleagues as well as old ones, discussing existing projects and new research and exploring the potential for new collaborations.
