Marriage, religion and the state

On 12 April 2019 Professor Rebecca Probert delivered the Wilson Memorial Lecture at the Edinburgh Centre for Private Law. Drawing on new research into nineteenth-century marriage practices, she showed how the types of weddings that we now regard as standard were once highly contested. She also showed how past practice could suggest some practical solutions to current issues.
