Securing a Positive Future for England’s Uplands

Professor Michael Winter spoke at this Consultation on the English Uplands, their value and potential to the economy and to the environment; the difficulties faced by people who live and work there; and how to make a more secure future for upland communities.  In June 2010 the Commission for Rural Communities (CRC) issued a report containing ten specific recommendations for the Uplands. Michael vice-chaired the CRC Inquiry that produced the report.

In the light of Defra’s plans to abolish the CRC on 29 June 2010, the Consultation will aim to identify ways in which the report’s recommendations may be achieved and to agree on a programme of specific actions, who should take them forward as well as a timetable for monitoring progress.  Michael will be speaking about the wider rural economy in the uplands while fellow Inquiry members will be covering agriculture and rural communities.
