British Council off-grid workshop in Malaysia
In August 2017 Dr Kate Baker, Research Fellow at the Centre for Water Systems, attended a British Council workshop called ‘Innovative designs of sustainable agro-hydro-health systems’.
Researchers from the UK and Malaysia explored topics in relation to Off-Grid communities in Malaysia. These included Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and using indigenous knowledge to create bio-monitoring tools, which can assist with the successful management of rainforest. Off-Grid Communities reside in remote areas, so are deprived of direct access to municipal water supply, electricity, wastewater, and other utility services.
It was organised by both Coventry University and Universiti Putra Malaysia at the Royal Belum rainforest, which is in North Malaysia. It is 300 million years old – one of the oldest rainforests in the world – and home to two communities of Orang Asli, an indigenous people of Malaysia.
