Dondu Sarisen - Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight
In our first 'Water they up to: CWS in the Spotlight' feature of 2022, we find out all about Postgraduate Researcher Dondu Sarisen.
What is your research about?
I am in the final year of my PhD which is funded by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of National Education. My research is about dealing with the problems of intermittent water supply networks, which is a common practice where there is water scarcity.
What is the most exciting part about your research?
It's exciting to work, produce and share knowledge with others. In particular, I enjoy taking a closer look at water-related issues that are highly impactful to people's quality of life, and trying to find solutions to these problems.
When thinking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?
Egrekkaya Dam has a permanent place in my memory due to family moments from my childhood. It is located near the village where my Mum was born and raised. We would go there to visit my grandparents. When I was a kid, whenever we passed through the dam, it always took my attention and I was amazed by the structure, and I was curious about the process of water distribution from reservoir to our houses.
Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?
A movie based on a true story - 'The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind' - comes to my mind when water is in question. William is a very courageous and intelligent boy who lives in Malawi and saves his village from famine, by building a windmill that produces the energy required to pump water from the well.
