What is your research about?
My research is about machine learning methods for leak localisation in potable water distribution networks. I am primarily trying to utilize the data that is already being collected and is available to water companies to narrow down where leaks are likely to be.
What is the most exciting part about your research?
Pushing the boundaries and trying things that may not have been tried before is an exciting, and sometimes scary, part of my research. Having other people then react positively to my work is also incredibly gratifying. However, I think the most exciting part is the potential positive impact my research could have in the water sector.
When thinking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?
The first place that comes to mind is the Somerset Levels. It's always humbling to think about how people have been managing and using the water there in different ways for thousands of years and how we still struggle with the estuary and flooding even now.
Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?
This would have to be Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender. She is a waterbender who has the power to control water. She'd make a great water engineer!
