Mayra Rodriguez - Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight
Next to feature in our 'Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight' series is Mayra Rodriguez, Postgraduate Research Student. Find out more about Mayra and her PhD research below.
What is your research about?
I am a third-year PhD student at the QUEX Institute; a joint agreement between the University of Exeter and the University of Queensland. My doctoral research aims to understand the long-term impacts and multiple benefits of green infrastructure in urban drainage systems. I am now exploring the application of spatial analysis to understand the effects of green infrastructure location on resilience performance.
What is the most exciting part about your research?
I feel privileged to have the opportunity to be doing this PhD under excellent supervision. I think the highlights are the technical skills I have been able to develop, as well as being part of a great University and research community.
When talking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?
The rivers of Uruguay; my home country. On the (endless) journeys across the country to reach the seaside for holidays or a visit to the capital, we would stop in every river to swim with my Dad. Today, swimming in these rivers might not be as straightforward due to various water issues in Uruguay – namely, water quality.
Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?
I associate water with music rather than a particular book or movie character. The two songs that come to mind are “The Water” by Johnny Flynn (UK) and “Water” by Juan Wauters (Uruguay).
