Professor Fu awarded Royal Society Fellowship
Dr Guangtao Fu, Associate Professor at the Centre for Water Systems, has received an Industry Fellowship award from the Royal Society, aimed at strengthening links between academia and industry.
Professor Fu will be working on the fellowship for four years with Northumbrian Water, a leading water provider in the UK. His research will investigate the development of smart water infrastructure systems using Information and Communication Technologies and big data already available in the water industry in response to a changing environment including extreme weather.
Professor Fu said “There is a critical need to develop new advanced data and visual analytics to unlock the value of large-scale water utility databases for informed real time decision making on a wide variety of different problems including leakage, flooding, water pollution and energy efficiency. This fellowship offers exactly such an opportunity to turn piecemeal techniques into integrated solutions for industry problems, thus is timely for major impact on large investments in water infrastructure in the next 50 years.”
“I am very excited to work with the company at the forefront of water research and practice as it develops new innovative solutions to meet the highest regulatory standards and deliver excellent value for money for its customers,” said Professor Fu. “Build on the previous collaborations with the company, this fellowship will provide a real added value by developing a shared research vision, establishing multi-level ties, and leading to a long-term, strategic partnership between the two institutions.”
