Dr Xu Wang
Royal Society Fellow joins CWS
Dr Xu Wang, Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has received a prestigious Newton International Fellowship from the Royal Society.
He has joined the Centre for Water Systems (CWS) at the University of Exeter, to conduct his two-year Fellowship with Professor David Butler.
Based on his Fellowship project, Professor Wang aims to analyze how best to update the current paradigm of wastewater pollution control towards resource efficiency in various global contexts, and identify effective solutions for the wastewater industry in its goal of enhancing sustainability.
Professor Wang said “Conventional wastewater services are facing sustainability challenges in terms of energy consumption, greenhouse gas emission and solid waste production among wider problems. There is a growing recognition that wastewater treatment must adopt more sustainable patterns to serve society’s need into the future. A promising transition towards the harvesting of resources (including energy, nutrients, metal and water itself) from wastewater appears to be crucial to achieve this goal. This Fellowship project provides an excellent opportunity to verify such a promising solution for wastewater services, deliver agreed-upon sustainability goals to the water sector and inform critical implications for the public and private investment that will occur in the next 10-20 years.”
“I am very excited to receive this extremely competitive Fellowship to work with Professor Butler including other leading-edge experts at CWS as the project will further strength my expertise in integrating sustainability science into water engineering, and promote knowledge transfer and exchange in this related field,’’ Said Professor Wang. “Expectations for wastewater treatment have evolved over time, and we believe our project outcomes will support the paradigm shift towards sustainability needed in the water industry and will help identify solutions and direct future efforts towards greater resource efficiency in UK. I’m very pleased to welcome Xu to Exeter to join us in this endeavour,” said Professor Butler.
