Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight - Dr Kate Baker
First to feature in our 'Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight' series is Dr Kate Baker, Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Find out more about Kate and her research below.
What is your research about?
I'm a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Water Systems, where I do everything but engineering! I lead aspects of the engaged research and public engagement activities on research projects that take place across the European Union and India. I work with engineers, social scientists, industry and the public on topics such as circular water solutions and digital water. Alongside my work at the university, I'm co-founder of Agile Rabbit - an organisation that helps academics engage their work with the public through events and podcasts - often in unusual venues and in original formats.
What is the most exciting part about your research?
I love the variety of my job and the problem solving aspects. No day is the same!
When talking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?
Lake Baikal in Siberia! This is the deepest and largest (by volume) lake in the world and it's the only place you can find freshwater seals. I spent some time at Baikal when I finished my undergrad working for the Great Baikal Trail. Beautiful place and would love to return one day.
Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?
I can't think of any...but I would love to be a river dolphin!
