Joint Nature Conservation Committee - Masterclass 28 November 2019, Peterborough

Professor Ian Bateman is on the Board of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC)

The Joint Conservation Committee invited Professor Ian Bateman in his capacity as member of the Natural Capital Committee for a special session to discuss the past, present and future of natural capital thinking.  He attended this session with Mel Austen (PML) along with Ian they are both experts in natural capital concepts and applications but have contrasting research backgrounds, experiences and interests.

Mel and Ian presented and debated on themes including the idea of costs, benefits and valuation (and what you do when the values are not robust), non-monetary valuation, and whether intrinsic value is a useful concept. Their Masterclass covered some recent NCC advice, such as net gain, the census, ELMs replacement of CAP subsidies to farmers as “public money for public goods”, extending this concept, and net gain in marine as well as terrestrial systems.

Professor Ian Bateman’s  presentation was recorded and be viewed here.
