Senior Mens 1st Eight racing in Championship Eights at BUCS Head
Rowing to success
Over the weekend of 19th/20th February, Exeter University Boat Club were at their second BUCS event of the season, hosted this year in Peterborough on the River Nene.
The two day event started with the Beginners Head, with Exeter fielding three men’s crews and two women’s crews. The Novice men’s first eight finished a very respectable 11th, with the second eight coming in 28th out of 42, and placing 8th out of the second boats. The Novice men’s coxed four placed 5th, missing out on 4th by only 0.6 seconds. The Novice women’s first eight placed a very respectable 15th out of 34 with the second eight coming 31st.
Sunday saw the Championship events with Exeter fielding a large number of crews in both the men’s and women’s categories. The Senior Men's 1st eight finished 10th, an excellent result in what is the blue ribbon event for rowing. This is usually how university rowing is ranked and this is the first time that Exeter have been in the top ten for several years. The Championship Quad finished 8th overall, close on the heels of a very quick Newcastle crew. The men’s lightweights also put in a good performance coming 4th in the coxless four beating Newcastle and UWE. More BUCS points were earned in the Championship Coxless four with a narrow loss to Cardiff but beating Nottingham, Northumbria and Reading.
The senior women produced some very good results with the Lightweight coxless four finishing 3rd and earning 10 points in the process. The coxless four finished 9th, missing out on eighth place and the crucial BUCS points by only 0.2 seconds over a 22 min race.
Overall a very good weekend for EUBC, coming home with a very satisfying 19 points.
