University Launches Joint Science & Sport Scholarships
The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, in partnership with the University’s High Performance Unit, has launched a new student scholarship programme for high-performing sports people studying undergraduate Engineering or IT Management for Business (ITMB).
The scholarships offer up to £4,500 per academic year through a reduction in tuition fees, subsidy of sporting expenses and provision of a variety of support services including physiotherapy, strength and conditioning training, nutritional support and sports psychology. The scholarships are available to prospective and current undergraduates studying any BEng/MEng Engineering programme or the BSc IT Management for Business programme, providing that they fulfil their specific sporting and academic requirements.
These landmark scholarships are the first to be offered by the University that combine both academic and sporting excellence and are the latest addition to Exeter’s Sports Scholarship Programme, which offers one of the leading support packages to elite athletes within Higher Education in the UK. The High Performance Unit is renowned for nurturing some of the country’s most promising student athletes, including London 2012 hopefuls Ian Haley (Hockey), Lucy Boulton (Beach Volleyball) and Nick Thompson (Sailing).
Engineering at Exeter is ranked 1st in the UK for student satisfaction (National Student Survey, 2011) and offers a range of professionally accredited programmes. IT Management for Business at Exeter, endorsed by “e-skills UK”, offers high employability success due to its strong industry links.
Nick Beasant, Assistant Director of Sport responsible for Performance and Competitions, is hoping that the College Sports Scholarships will attract further high calibre sportspeople to study at Exeter. He says: “We have worked closely with the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences to put together a scholarship package that will give students targeted support to enable them to reach both their sporting and academic potential.”
