Exeter Tennis Centre welcomes new head of student tennis

Steven Wood has joined Exeter Tennis Centre as the new Head of Student Tennis. The role will see Steven working closely with the Student Tennis Club and build on their current performance programmes.

Steven brings a wealth of experience to the role. Having competed at county level since the age of twelve, Steven has also achieved ranked status in the NCAA Division 1 tennis league in the United States. In his capacity as a coach Steven has toured with the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), and been a Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) National Coach at the prestigious Queen’s Club.

In his role as Head of Student Tennis Steven will work closely with the Student Tennis Club, developing the teams and working with individual players to create personal training programmes. Steven commented “Its feels fantastic to join such a great team here at the University of Exeter. I am incredibly excited about the role and look forward to helping the team advance by building on the great student tennis programme already in place. The facilities here at Exeter Tennis Centre are world class, and make it the perfect venue to promote tennis to both students and the local community.”

Steven’s arrival has coincided with an incredibly successful week for the Student Tennis Club who achieved a number of decisive victories the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) tournament. The Men’s first and second teams both achieved decisive 12:0 wins against Oxford and Cardiff respectively while the Women’s squad also enjoyed a successful afternoon, the first team beating Cambridge 8:4.

Tennis is one of the University’s ten focus sports with Exeter Tennis Centre achieving LTA Performance Accreditation. The centre has recently benefitted from the £8million development currently taking place at the Sports Park, which has seen six outdoor tennis courts covered.

Director of Tennis Will McNally commented “It has been a brilliant start to our BUCS campaign. Already the new facilities here at Exeter Tennis Centre are paying dividends by helping our students to train in all conditions. We are incredibly excited for the rest of the season and absolutely delighted to have Steven on board. His wealth of experience will undoubtedly drive the student tennis programme forward and help us reach our performance targets.”
