Golf Scholar drives South West team to victory

On October 19 University of Exeter Golf Scholar Laurie Potter competed for the South West of England’s 10 man team against the Midland Counties. University of Exeter Alumnus, previous golf scholar and member of the 2005 BUCS winning golf team Ali James (Exercise and Sports Science, 2005) also joined the team which consisted of the best golfer’s in the region. The competition which took place at Copt Heath Golf Club near Birmingham was a close affair with the South West playing hard to retain the title.

The early morning fourball matches were extremely close with each side sharing wins. Following a fantastic result last weekend in the BUCS competition Laurie continued his exceptional run of form by winning his match alongside team mate Tom Fox (Cornwall). The pair dominated the round running out 4&2 winners which allowed the South West side to take a 3-2 lead going into the afternoon.

Laurie again excelled in the afternoon singles, making an impressive four birdies around the turn to win his match 5&3 and bring in the final point. The competition was fierce throughout the day and ending in a tie of 7.5-7.5, ensuring that the South West retained the title from the Midlands.

Laurie is one of seven golf scholars at the University of Exeter who receive specialist training and support from the University’s distinguished High Performance Programme. High performance golf manager Craig Townsend commented, “This is another great result for Golf at the University of Exeter.  The University of Exeter strives to help talent athletes reach their full potential and it is great to see him performing so well at a regional level. The next step on the ladder is England honours”.
