Bradbury excels at international golf championships

Katie Bradbury, (1st year, Accounting and Finance) returned from a successful trip to the Portuguese Amateur Championship competition in Portugal which took place 30 January – 2 February.

Katie, who is part of the University’s Sports Scholarship Scheme, was selected for the tournament as part of a three women Welsh team alongside compatriots Amy Boulden and Becky Harries.

Bad weather blighted the event at the prestigious Montado Golf Resort near Lisbon and saw the final day cancelled due to heavy fog and strong winds. As a result competitors each played three rounds with the best two counting towards the final score.

19 teams took place in the competition which saw 90 of Europe’s best amateur golfers do battle on the fairway. Overall the Welsh team finished a fantastic fifth, Katie also finished in an exceptional 18th place individually with scores of 71, 77 and 76.

She said: “I am pleased with the result, a top 20 finish was my goal and as it was the first tournament of the year I feel I did well. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season and think it could be a successful one with my next tournament being the R and A scholar’s event followed by the BUCS [British Universities and Colleges Sport] finals in April.”

This result marks another notable international achievement for Katie who has played with the Welsh women’s side for three years. In 2009 she formed part of the winning team at the Home International competition and has since gone on to achieve top 20 positions in the British Women’s amateur and English Women’s stroke play events.

Golf Performance manager Craig Townsend said "To finish 18th in a major European International event is a fantastic achievement. European Ladies golf is so strong at both an amateur and professional level and Katie has shown she can hold her own with the best in Europe. This experience can only benefit her as she competes for the University in various BUCS events over the next 3 months."

As a Sports Scholar Katie competes for the University of Exeter Student Golf Club in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Competition. is one of the University’s 10 focus sports with teams receiving specialist training and support.  On Friday 1 February the first team consolidated their position at the top of BUCS Premier South League table after beating Newport 4-2 away in the final match of the season.
