The University of Exeter women's rugby team beat Loughborough, Edinburgh and Leeds Met on their way to the final.
Women’s rugby on top form
The University of Exeter’s Women’s Rugby Club is riding high after achieving a spot in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championship final, taking place at Twickenham on 24 March.
The side booked their place at the home of English Rugby after a close home victory against Leeds Met Carnegie 1sts on 6 March, having already overcome Loughborough and Edinburgh in the earlier stages of the competition.
They will now face the winner of the other semi-final between Cardiff Metropolitan and Durham University, taking place on 18 March, for the coveted title of BUCS Champions.
Jo Yapp, High Performance Women’s Rugby Manager and former England International commented “I am delighted by the performance of all the girls this season. The whole squad has been working incredibly hard and it is fantastic to be in such a strong position. We have a big game ahead of us but I am confident that if we work hard we can get the result that the whole team deserve.”
This excellent achievement was added to by Amber Reed’s continuing good form for the England Senior Women’s team at this year’s Six Nations Tournament. The Sports Scholar added to her impressive run of performances for the side by kicking two conversions, helping England ease to a 34-0 victory over Italy.
The exercise and sports science student has played in all of England’s Six Nations matches so far despite only gaining her first international cap in November and has been selected for the final match against Wales on 17 March.
Amber, who also plays for the University of Exeter women’s first team, commented: “I'm really excited about the University final on the 24th but still have one more game against Wales to focus on this Sunday. We put in a good performance in the first half [against Italy] and played with some good shape. We are second in the [Six Nations] table at the moment and looking to stay there with a good result and performance on Sunday.
The Exeter girls put in an amazing performance against Leeds Met. on Wednesday, winning 17-14. EUWRFC [University of Exeter Women's Rugby Football Club] had the majority of possession and territory throughout the match and their dominance wasn't reflected by the close score line. Everyone is excited looking ahead to the final and it would be great to get as much support there as possible.”
Tickets to the final, which kicks off at 12:00 at Twickenham Stadium, are available for £5 (free for under 12s) on the gate. The Sports Office would like to encourage everyone to come and support the side on this fantastic occasion.
