University Cricket Club make runs for charity

Players from both the men’s and women’s cricket teams took part in a charity run which saw teams of six complete 26 miles, in full batting attire, between the stumps – a staggering 2150 runs.

 The event took place at the University’s Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre where the men’s cricket club hit the headlines last month after winning the opportunity to feature alongside the biggest names in cricket in the 2013 Ashes video game, due out in June.

Club captain Richard Croney said “It’s been a fantastic day for a really great cause. Over 60 of the guys have shown their support and worked hard to raise funds. We don’t have many long distance runners in the club so it’s been quite interesting, but good to shake off the final cobwebs before the outdoor season starts in April.”

CLIC Sargent is one of the UK’s leading cancer charities providing clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to children who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Director of Cricket Julian Wyatt, who first organised the event, was thrilled with the efforts of the club. He commented: “We first ran this event in 2011 when Ian Botham became an honorary graduate at the University. He’s heavily involved with the charity and we thought it would be great to show our support as a cricket club. We are hoping to make this a regular event on the centre’s calendar. The whole club have put in a brilliant performance and are raising some excellent funds for a worthy cause; hopefully they will be putting in as many runs during the up-coming season.”
