University Lacrosse player Lucy Craig tackles one of the obstacles at the RockSolidRace
Lacrosse club goes RockSolid for charity
The University of Exeter Lacrosse Club has raised over £3000 to help retired soldiers after competing in the RockSolidRace on Sunday 16 March.
The race, which took place at Escot Park, saw the team face 37 obstacles, including bogs, barbed wire, and skips filled with ice.
Club member Alex Goosey thoroughly enjoyed the event commenting: “The University of Exeter Lacrosse Club saw this as a fantastic opportunity both to raise money for charity and to provide a reason to keep in shape over a hectic Easter term. As soon as we cleared the first obstacle – a tall pyramid of hay bales – we hit the streams and ankle-deep mud and realised what we’d signed up for.”
Despite the numerous challenges and exceptionally cold weather the club put in a brave performance, all completing the 10km distance. University Lacrosse Scholar Emily Zaborski and twin team mates Lucy and Jess Craig mastered the course, achieving the fasted female times of all the 2000 entrants.
Alex continued “From climbing eight foot walls to slipping down the hydroslide, from crawling through dark tunnels filled with water to running with logs and sandbags, the obstacles did not disappoint. The event provided some fantastic photos, a great memory, and a huge sense of achievement that is already causing many to voice their interest in running it again next year, or moving on to bigger and better events.”
An impressive 43 members of the club, including an alumnus, signed up to event in aid of ABF The Soldiers Charity. Overall the club raised a staggering £3450.75 for the charity which provides financial assistance and support to serving and retired soldiers of the British Army.
Athletic Union President and Lacrosse Club member Joe Batten lauded the fundraising efforts, he said: “It is always fantastic to see clubs coming together to raise money for charity. The Athletic Union always has a strong charity connection and the Lacrosse club have done exceptionally well in raising this incredible figure for a truly worthy cause.”
