Exeter Tennis Coach gets Great Britain Call up

The University of Exeter graduate (MA Law 2006), and first ever tennis scholar, was nominated for the position and will provide support to the team whilst gaining behind the scenes experience of working with the national side

“It is a huge honour to have been selected for such an important event on the international tennis calendar,” she commented, “The Fed Cup is one of the biggest women’s tournaments in the world and I am looking forward to the chance to get to know the workings of a highly professional international team.”

A former top 20 British international player herself, Charlotte will offer support to the likes of Olympic Silver medallist Laura Robson and UK number one Heather Watson in a team headed up by captain Judy Murray, mother of world number two Andy.

Her selection comes as part of Murray’s campaign to provide better opportunities to female coaches in the UK.

Charlotte added: “It will be great to be working with Judy. She is a real inspiration, has a fantastic energy and is incredibly passionate about helping women’s tennis. To join such high profile names is a huge honour, and I hope I can bring something new to the mix to push the team forward.”

The team will travel to Buenos Aires for the World Group II playoff against the Argentineans. If successful they will qualify for the Fed Cup's World Group II in 2014.

Director of Tennis Will McNally said: “We are delighted to see that Charlotte has been hand-picked to take part in this initiative. The work she has done, and continues to do, with performance players from the local community leaves no doubt in my mind that she is one of the top tennis coaches in the UK and thoroughly deserves this opportunity.  The whole team here will be following her progress closely and we hope that the experience will help to further develop her coaching skills.”

Charlotte, who has already travelled to Argentina in preparation for the tour, has spent weeks researching the Argentine side and devising strategies to present to the team. She continued “It’s a busy time, but I’m incredibly excited. I have been busy analysing video footage and putting together ideas to take with me. It’s a new challenge but I am relishing the opportunity to be part of such an important set up.”

As a coach I am always looking for new ways to improve the performance of my players and I think this experience will help me to develop new strategies to take back to Exeter.”
