Last year saw over 3900 students attend the charity match.

Football Varsity to kick off term one

Excitement is building for the sixth annual Football Varsity between the University of Exeter Football Club and local side Exeter City on 25 September.

Kicking off at 19:45, the varsity is one of the highlights of the student calendar. Last year’s event saw over 3900 students pack the stands of St James’ Park in the centre of Exeter. Exeter City, who play in National League Two, have an impressive record at the event.

A 3:0 victory over their University rivals in 2012 promises to ensure a closely fought contest this year as the “gown” side seek to end the “town’s” dominant run of form.

A collaboration between the two clubs, the Football Varsity is held in memory of University of Exeter footballer Mike Poulden who tragically died of cardiomyopathy in 200 and Adam Stansfield who was lost to bowel cancer in 2010.

Proceeds from the match are given to the two football club’s chosen charities; the Adam Stansfield Foundation, which provides sporting opportunities for young people in Devon, Herefordshire and Somerset and the Cardiomyopathy Association which offers support and advice to sufferers of heart muscle disease.

“We are really looking forward to this year’s Football Varsity.” Commented Athletic Union President Alex Powell, who helps oversee the management of the University’s 49 Student Sports clubs. “Not only is this a brilliant student event, but it raises valuable funds to provide support to these two incredible charities. Last year we raised £2500.00 which was split equally between the two charities so that they can continue to provide essential care to those who need it most.

This year’s varsity will also feature pre-match entertainment from a local DJ, and a half time performance from the University of Exeter cheerleaders.

Alex added: ““We are incredibly grateful to Exeter City Football Club for inviting us to their ground for the match. The Football Varsity has become an essential event on the student calendar and is a brilliant way for the whole student body to come together and enjoy an evening of friendly sport and great entertainment. There is always a fantastic atmosphere with fancy dress often adding to the festivities.

“Last year’s match was really enjoyable, and the University Football Club will be looking to make up for their previous defeat against City. We are really looking forward to this year’s varsity and hope that it will be the biggest and best we have ever hosted.”

Tickets are available for £5.00 in advance from the Athletic Union, Sports Park reception and members of the University Football Club. Tickets can also be purchased at the gate for £6.00.
