The Alumni were crowned the overall winners of the event, defeating the current students 12:8.
Badminton Alumni return to the Sports Park for annual tournament
Alumni spanning almost a decade were re-united on 19 October for the bi-annual ‘Past vs Present’ badminton tournament.
16 former Badminton Club members attended the team event which pitted the University’s finest against their forbears in a mixture of singles and doubles matches.
Following a series of exceptionally tight games and some brilliant badminton, experience triumphed over youth as the Alumni side clinched a 12:8 victory over their undergraduate counterparts.
Director of Badminton Helen ward was instrumental in the events organisation and commented: “It’s fantastic to see so many badminton players, old and new, coming together for this friendly competition. Being part of a sports club at Exeter creates so many memories and friendships and it is important that we stay connected with our alumni, who have been so important to the club’s development.
“Everyone has had a brilliant time today and I would personally like to thank all of the alumni who came down and made the day so special.”
Alumni attendees included Dan Fitt (2012) who commented:”I love returning for the badminton alumni events. Each time they reunite me with a racket and old friends whilst allowing me to meet the new squad and find out how the club are doing.
“It was fantastic to see the new facilities at the Sports Park this year and continuing the link I have with the University Badminton Club keeps me keen in supporting their events and fundraising.”
The honours of the day went to Zodee Ledger (2004) and Milo Rapacioli (2012), who were awarded Alumni players of the day following a series of outstanding performances on court.
Once the competitive matches were completed, the alumni players were treated to a tour of the newly completed Russell Seal Health and Fitness Centre before heading into the City for a meal with current club members.
The event came at an exciting time for the University of Exeter Badminton Club as the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) season gets underway. Having recently welcomed new Head Coach Kelvin Edwards to their ranks, the club are already seeing positive results on court.
Two victories from two, including a 6:2 win over league favourites Southampton, have seen the men’s first team move up to the top of Western 1A, greatly increases their changes of promotion back in the Premier League.
The Badminton Club hosts regular events for former students which all badminton alumni are welcome to join. If you would like to be involved in any upcoming alumni events please contact Helen Ward.
