AU Olympians go for gold

Opening with a speech by Professor Bruce Coleman and the raising of the Exeter standard, the evening kicked off in true Olympic style.

12 teams of eight were put forward to represent their own respective AU Club in a series of trials to see who would be crowned AU Olympic Champions 2013.

Competitors were put through their paces by an array of events including shot put, high jump, standing long jump along, enduring the burn during the tricep dips and others.

These were followed by highly competitive relay races which demonstrated the speed and agility we’re so used to seeing from Exeter teams either on the hockey, rugby and football pitch, tennis court, boating lake and athletics track.

Each event offered 12 points for first place, 11 for second, with the last team scoring one point.

AU President Alex Powell AU Executive Team and commented “It has been a lot of fun here tonight and a brilliant reminder of what great sportsmen and women we have at Exeter. At such a busy time of year for the BUCS teams it is great to also be able to enjoy a friendly competition and see all the clubs socialising together. I would like to say a huge thank you to the Athletics Club for, once again, putting on such a great event.”

In an incredibly close competition, no single team appeared to dominate the field. 2013 BUCS National Champions, the Women’s’ Rugby Club took the ladies’ title, for the second year running, whilst the Football Club took the top spot in the men’s event.

The Athletics Club showed their aptitude for the range of sports and taking gold in the mixed competition, also replicating their success from the previous year.

Athletics Club Captain Ollie Garrod commented, “It was an incredible evening; to bring together 10 different AU clubs in one competition makes for a unique event and one which we’re very proud to host. Following from the success of this we hope to host a Campus Road Relays event in 2014. Thanks to all those who came out to help, compete and support.”

Held in support of the Movember, which has seen hundreds of students across campus grow moustaches this November, the event raised £140.00 for the charity. An international campaign, Movember raises money and awareness of men’s health issues.
