University of Exeter scholar Nick Cooper helped secure victory over Cardiff Met.

Hockey club victorious in national league clash

The University of Exeter Men’s Hockey Club completed the first half of the NOW:Pensions England Hockey League season on a winning note with a 2-1 home victory over 2013 Men’s Conference West champions Cardiff & Met on 30 November.

Fourth placed Exeter, who beat leaders Team Bath Buccaneers 3-0 earlier in the season at the Sports Park, will return to league action at Cheltenham on 9 February buoyed by their latest success and with their sights set on the summit.

Sunday’s win over Cardiff & Met came courtesy of early goals.

South African Olympic star, Ian Haley, got Exeter off to a flying start with his fourth minute opener.

Top scorer Nick Cooper then doubled the greens’ lead after 12 minutes, avenging Exeter’s early season defeated to Cardiff by scoring his 13th goal of the season.

University of Exeter graduate Claire Thomas finished 2013 as the Investec Women's Hockey League top scorer with 16 goals from 11 Conference West matches. Devonian Thomas claimed her 16th goal in Isca University's 1-1 home draw with Bristol club Firebrands.

Thomas put joint Isca and University of Exeter side ahead after 42 minutes before the home side conceded a last minute goal to Holly Savage.

Isca University’s next opponents are Swansea, at the University Sports Park on 8 February.
