2014 promises exciting BUCS standoff

Currently lying 6^th in the national rankings on 1594 points, the University of Exeter is less than 150 points shy of podium position, following a tightly contested start to the competition before Christmas (scores as published by BUCS on 09 January 2014).

The start of the season saw a number of standout achievements with Exeter’s sailors finishing 2^nd at the Fleet Racing Championships and the Golf 1sts, Rugby League 1sts, Women’s Squash 1sts, Men’s Indoor Cricket 1sts, Women’s indoor cricket 1sts and Men’s Tennis 3rds all remaining unbeaten in their respective leagues.  

Last season was a landmark year in the history of Sport at the University, achieving its highest ever BUCS finish of 5^th place.

Assistant Director of Sport (Performance and Competitions) Nick Beasant, explained how from here on in every point will count for each of the top 10 institutions: “The scores are really tight so far, particularly between 3^rd and 6^th place which are separated by just 150 points. With some of our major points contributors yet to start fully competing, so we can look forward to an action packed 2014.

 “The competition is fierce again this year and gaining points is only going to get tougher and tougher, especially when you have three major sporting institutions all jostling for position. Nevertheless, I am confident that we can continue to build momentum and maintain a high ranking in the table this spring.

“We are in a strong position, and there is a lot to be optimistic about as we move towards the second half of the season.”

The second half for the season will be marked by some key matches, including the annual Rugby Varsity, played at Exeter Chiefs’ Sandy Park Stadium on Wednesday 19 February, which will help decide the draw for the BUCS Championship knockouts where the club will be hoping to emulate their semi-final finish last year. The University’s Golfers and women’s rugby 1^st XV squad are also looking to retain their status as BUCS national champions.
