Snooker and Pool Club sink opposition
The University of Exeter Snooker and Pool Club continued their dominant 2014 season with victory at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Eightball Pool Championships, 20-23 February, in Great Yarmouth.
Contested by 88 teams of five, initially split into two divisions, the tournament saw 467 individual participants step up to the table.
Exeter’s 1st team flew through the group stages with decisive 6:0 victories over Kent’s 2nds and Birmingham 1sts before 6-2 and 6-3 victories over Manchester Met 2nds and St Andrew’s 1sts respectively.
The team of James Littlefair, Edward Poultney, Dave Lloyd, Jin Foulger and Joe Simons had a more difficult time in the knockouts, however, scraping past Portsmouth 1sts 6-4 before a 7-6 play-off victory against Strathclyde 1sts, who missed two black balls for the match.
The semi-final saw another play-off, this time Dave Lloyd sparing any deciding frame nerves by getting the team over the line for a 7-5 win over Manchester Met 1sts.
An all-star final saw the Southern Universities Champions, Exeter, face the Northern Universities counterpart Lancaster. Exeter took an early lead overcoming a mid-session fight back to take title 6-3 following an outstanding clearance from captain James Littlefair.
The Victory in Great Yarmouth represents the University of Exeter’s fourth title this season, and closely follows their Midlands Universities Snooker Championship win in Coventry.
In that event Jin Foulger claimed the singles title without dropping a single frame, whilst the team overcame eight time champions Warwick 6-1 in a decisive victory.
