Over forty players took part in the tournament at the University of Exeter's Sports Park.
Goals galore at Hospiscare football tournament
The World Cup took a back seat as teams from across the University of Exeter showed their prowess on the pitch at the annual Hospiscare five-a-side football tournament.
Glorious sunshine greeted the eight teams, made up of University and Hospiscare staff, as they tested their skills on the astro-turf at the Streatham Sports Park.
Now in its second year the tournament, organised by Campus Services staff members Wayne Hill and Andrew Fry, raised over £200 for the charity.
Defending champions ‘Best of BHL’ again asserted their dominance on the tournament, finishing 12 points clear at the top of the table, having only conceded two goals on the night.
Andrew Fry was chief official on the night, and praised the sportsmanship of the teams: “We’ve had a lot of fun here tonight and it’s great to support an excellent local charity. BHL have been worthy winners again but all the teams have shown great spirit.
“We’ve seen some great games, excellent goals and acrobatic saves. It’s been very entertaining, over 100 goals have been scored and everyone has thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to everyone at the Sports Park for their help tonight and for donating the pitch this evening.
“Hospiscare provide an important service and it’s a privilege to be able to support them. We can all make a difference by supporting charities like these which are so important to the local community.”
Hospiscare is the chosen charity of the University of Exeter’s Campus Services. Founded in 1982, the charity provides dedicated care and support to local people who are terminally ill.
Representatives of the charity also took the pitch, led by Education and Training specialist Justin Densham. He said: “Thanks to everyone who turned up to play and support Hospiscare. All funds raised are important and make an incredible difference to us. Thanks again to the University and particularly Wayne and Andrew for organising the tournament.”
