Catherine Pope joined the Great Britain U20 side at the World Junior Ultimate Frisbee Championships in Lecco

Pope returns from World Ultimate Frisbee Champs

University of Exeter Ultimate Frisbee dynamo Catherine Pope (2nd year English and Drama) has returned from Italy where she competed in the World Junior Ultimate Frisbee Championships from 20-26 July.

Taking place in Lecco, Lombardy, the championships saw some 1,000 athletes take to the pitch in a competitive version of the popular summer past-time. Catherine joined a squad of 23 U20 players in the Great Britain side which finished 12th in the competition overall.

"Going to Worlds was an amazing experience” Commented Catherine. “It was emotionally and physically draining, but nothing can beat playing the sport you love at a high level every day. It has helped me to develop as a player and I feel lucky to be part of the incredible GB u20 Women’s Team. We did ourselves proud and I hope I get the opportunity to compete in something like this again.”

Catherine is the social secretary of the University of Exeter Ultimate Frisbee Club who have gained a formidable reputation in the disk throwing world. The club were crowned Indoor National Champions in 2011/2012 and Division 2 Indoor National Champions in 2012/2013.

Athletic Union president Andy Higham said he was pleased to see Exeter students from such a diverse range of sports be represented on the international stage. He said: “To compete for your country is an incredible achievement and something that every athlete should aspire too. We are lucky at the University of Exeter to have talented players like Catherine flying the Exeter flag around the world.”
