Accommodation and Active Devon staff tested the new table at Lopes Hall.
Ping Pong hits campus
University of Exeter Sport has teamed up with Sport England, Active Devon and the English Table Tennis Association to deliver free to use tables, bats and balls to students.
Two permanent tables have assembled at Lopes and Birks Grange halls with a further two roll-away tables also being provided to James Owen Court and Kay House (Duryard).
An additional table will also be moved around various locations on campus for events and promotions.
University Wellness Officer Paul Mouland said: “I think this is a great initiative for the campus which gives students a chance to use sport as way to socialise, particularly new students on arrivals weekend.
“It shows how the University has linked in with the local community and county sports partnership to promote the same values of keeping the local and student population active through sport.”
The tables were supplied as part of the national Ping! initiative designed to get more people playing table tennis socially.
The project has seen tables placed in cities around the UK for people to play on for free. Since its inception in 2010 the project has helped over 800,000 people pick up a bat.
Senior Accommodation Officer Nicola Baker said: “Following the success of Ping! Exeter during the summer, we are delighted that the University will now be a legacy location, with tables available for students in our residences, to use and enjoy for free.
“Are you new to Exeter University? This is a great way to meet people where you are living. Starting as a social sport we hope this could lead to team competitions. So look out for tables near where you live & join in the fun.”
