AJ and Ellie have been selected for Team Bath long squad

Exeter netballers in 2015 Netball Superleague squad

University of Exeter Sports Scholars Ellie Gibbons and Ashleigh Jay have been named in the Team Bath squad for the upcoming 2015 Netball Superleague season. This is the first time these High Performance Athletes have been selected and are 2 of 9 new players in the squad.

In their pre-season warm up the squad took on Scotland on November 22 to tune up before the new season commences in January, with a tri-tournament scheduled for this weekend. The final 2015 squad, made up of 15 players, will be announced later this year ready for the new Superleague season in January.

Ellie, who is in her second year studying Exercise and Sports Science, commented: "The high performance programme has given me the opportunity to experience an athlete’s lifestyle first hand. There is so much support, especially from Charlie Hale (Coach) and Beef (Alan Pope, Strength and Conditioning Coach) both on and off court which allows me to not only improve in my sport but has also had a positive impact on my lifestyle as a whole".

Both girls play for the University Netball first team, part of the Southern Premier League. As one of the University’s Focus Sports, Exeter’s Netball programme receives specialist support from the High Performance Unit, with access to the Athlete Development Centre and other support services.

Final year Exercise and Sport Science student AJ said: "If it wasn't for the high performance netball programme I would not be where I am today. I would not have been able to realise my full potential and to make the improvements I actually did. The time that Charlie has invested in me has made me the player I am today and with the S&C and access to nutritional workshops and Physio I have been able to treat my body like an athlete meaning I can compete with the girls at this new level of netball".

Alison Davidson, Director of Sport at the University commented: “We are extremely proud of the girls and it is a fantastic opportunity for them. It will be exciting to see their progression and development as part of the squad, and see them bring back their experience to benefit the University team here”.
