Exeter's 1st team put in a dominating performance!

Exeter Rugby 1st team win Varsity 41 - 0 against Bath

With an electrifying atmosphere inside the stadium, the support for both sides was certainly vocal! The evening was opened with a dazzling display by the excellent University of Exeter cheerleaders, and then shortly after the much-anticipated match began.

Although the final score doesn’t suggest it, there were certainly a few nervous moments for the Green side of the crowd, with Bath’s George Drury getting through Exeter’s defences and nearly putting Bath on the score board early on. But shortly after, Exeter broke through and by the close of the first half Exeter enjoyed a 12-0 advantage through two tries and a conversion. However, as the second half revealed, Exeter clearly wouldn’t be satisfied with only two tries! Director of Rugby Keith Fleming admitted his side’s performance could improve through the second half, and the team wasted no time in proving him right.

Opening the second half with a quickly-taken penalty from Doe, Exeter went on to score an unanswered four tries and three conversions in that half alone, resulting in the incredible 41 -0 final scoreline. Fittingly, the game ended with the sixth try and conversion in the closing minutes of the game, giving the crowd another huge reason to cheer!

By the end of the game, tries from Struminski, Waltier, Davis, Skinner and Doe, four conversions (Doe and Gabbitas between them) and the penalty from Doe electrified Sandy Park and silenced Bath, as Exeter enjoyed an emphatic victory.

Ben King, club captain and University of Exeter Scholar, said:
“It was an amazing evening for EURFC as we secured the title of BUCS south premier champions. An evening like last nights is only made possible by the continued support from our Director of Rugby Keith and the thousands of supporters who turned out"

Director of Rugby, Keith Fleming said “it was a great night. Our performance was a little unsure in the first half but after a quick talk at half time, we can be very pleased with our play through the second half”.

Exeter’s fantastic performance owes much to the hard work and dedication of the players and the support team at the university. The squad work hard with the highly respected Strength and Conditioning programme, and this great result is the culmination of skill and training at the fantastic sports facilities at the University of Exeter.
