University of Exeter defeat Bristol in Cricket varsity

The University of Exeter captain Ollie Mills won the toss and chose to bowl first in what looked favourable conditions.  Exeter bowled well to take wickets at regular intervals with none of the Bristol batsman being comfortable or able to get going enough to ensure the big score they needed. Bristol were eventually bowled out for a below-par 108, with wickets being shared around between Jonathan Burden (3), James Rimmer, Tom Coldman, Alex Hughes and Rob Craze. A great all round bowling performance matched in the field.

In reply Exeter cantered to a victory by 8 wickets with plenty of overs to spare. After losing two wickets of Alex Morgan and Ollie Mills in quick succession, opening Batsman Rob Craze (45 not out) and Tom Coldman (30 not out) came together to give the crowd some entertainment at the end of the day as the game was won in a hurry. The largely Exeter crowd cheered every run and boundary willing the victory.

Exeter captain Ollie Mills was presented with the Varsity Shield, by University of Exeter’s Dr Bruce Coleman who is a highly influential figure to the cricket side. It was a proud moment for Ollie and well deserved.

With approximately £9,000 raised for charity the annual event was once again a huge success with the takings going towards the Multiple Sclerosis Society and to further develop the University of Exeter Cricket Club.  The University of Exeter Men’s and Women’s Cricket Clubs are grateful to all their supporters especially EY who generously supported the event as part of their work with the University’s High Performance Programme.

Julian Wyatt the Director of Cricket summarised the day, he said: “I thought it was an outstanding day in excellent weather in front of a record crowd. Everyone was very pleased with the cricket played, and the support received off it. It was an excellent victory with good team work and all round performances.”

James Rimmer, the Men’s Cricket Club Captain added: “Brilliant Day, Brilliant Weather, Brilliant Result…Brilliant Club!”

The University of Exeter Men’s and Women’s Cricket Clubs utilise the superb Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre at the University of Exeter Sport Park, which offers indoor year round training. The club also plays at the University of Exeter Topsham Sports Ground and Exeter Cricket Club.
