Alumni enjoyed a picturesque round of Golf

University of Exeter Alumni compete for Invitational title

Exeter alumni and their guests enjoyed a round of golf at the picturesque course in Richmond’s Old Deer Park.

The University of Exeter annual Invitational Golf Day took place on Friday 2nd October at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club.

The Invitational Golf Day is one of three popular golf events in the alumni calendar, alongside the Northcote Trophy (contested between student and alumni teams) and the Alumni Golf Day in August in which alumni compete for the coveted Rod Alexander Trophy.

This year’s Invitational event was organised by Roger Peek (Mathematics, 1966) and held at Royal Mid-Surrey GC thanks to Nicholas Bull (Chemistry, 1973). The University’s established Alumni Golf Society has gone from strength to strength in recent years thanks to the leadership of John Gilbert (Economics, 1972) and Rod Alexander (History, 1971). These events are highly popular, great fun and an opportunity to catch up with previous Golf Club members.

The Invitational individual competition was won by Ian Roberts (Economics, 2001) who played consistently well throughout the day. Julie & Bruce Leith won the mixed pairs competition and Ron Baynes took the Leading Guest prize.

The University of Exeter has a proud golfing tradition and is currently ranked first in the sport of all UK Higher Education institutions in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) rankings having amassed more BUCS points in golf last season than any UK institution previously.

Director of Sport Alison Davidson commented “it’s great to engage with so many of our graduates through the Alumni Golf Society. We simply couldn’t run the UK’s leading student golf programme without this ongoing support, for which we are extremely thankful. We look forward to seeing alumni and supporters at a future University event”.
