Intramural Basketball

Record numbers for Intramural

With a record 321 teams entered, this year’s intramural season looks to be bigger and better than ever!

35 recreational leagues in 7 different mixed and single-sex sports, has attracted almost 3,000 students, staff and alumni to play weekly at the Sports Park. Teams were entered from halls of residences, groups of coursemates, Guild Societies, AU Clubs and even academic offices!

Mixed sports have become increasingly popular year on year, with only 50 Mixed Netball teams entering into leagues in the 2013/14, this was increased to 60 in 2014/15 and this year we have an astonishing 72 teams playing in 6 leagues on a weekly basis! Mixed Hockey is also gaining in popularity due to the size and strength of the Men’s and Women’s clubs, by offering a less competitive playing atmosphere to their more novice players – we now have 20 teams competing across 2 leagues, compared to the 16 teams of last year.

The leagues are kindly sponsored by Hole in the Wall, who offer loyalty cards to our captains, and meals for the team awarded the Team of the Month!

We are now in Week 2 of fixtures and the season is well underway.

Duckes Meadow plays host to our twenty 11-a-side football teams on Sunday mornings, with standout performances coming from Business and Finance Society (BFS), who are leading League 1, and Moberly House who sailed to an 11-5 victory in their very first game!

Mixed Netball is still a very close affair, with a lot of teams winning their first two games, and therefore only goal difference is separating the top 4 teams in each league.

With 149 6-a-side football teams playing on 4 different days, the leagues are hugely popular as usual, and competition is tough! A few teams still have a 100% win rate going into the third week of fixtures.

The Mixed Hockey leagues are being led by the Golden Oldies, a team of 4th years who are accustomed to the intramural ethos, after a storming 11-2 win over Exeter University Officer Training Corps in Week 1.

If you missed the entry deadline, there are still plenty of chances to get involved in recreational sport – we hold weekly Pitch Up and Play sessions in both male and female football, men’s futsal and mixed touch rugby. There are also opportunities to enter regular AU events, including UV Volleyball, the Dodgeball Tournament, and the Grecian Shield, our annual 6-a-side tournament!
