Demons start the season with a shut out
On 31st October, the Exeter Demons welcomed Aberystwyth Tarannau down at the fortress that is Duckes Meadow. After a long and successful preseason campaign, the Demons came into the game confident but acknowledged that Tarannau would be tough opposition after their extremely successful endeavours last season, as any team with an 8-0 record should be.
The fixture was a tough contest, with the run game featuring predominantly for both teams despite the favourable conditions and green grass on the pitch for a change.
The Exeter Demons got off to a fantastic start with club rookie Josh White scoring a 60 yard run on just the second possession of the game after our defence forced the punt on Tarranau’s opening drive. Exeter’s resilient defence and explosive offence in the opening exchanges set the tempo and script for the rest of the game. The Demons defence forced turnovers in excellent field positions, a pick from returning corner back Josh Carvey allowed second year running back Jake Cowley to run in for his first score of the season. Angus Turner scored his first touchdown of the season, adding to his two point conversion from our opening score; while Will Straughan returned from his year abroad with a rushing TD and another two point attempt converted. Niel Lewis finished the first half scoring with a 75 yard run, with successful Aber drives forcing pressure on the Demons defence and placing our offence towards our own goal line.
Offensive rookie Sanj Bagga opened the second half scoring after a long offensive drive, with fellow rookie Gabor Isai following closely behind adding his first score for the club. Jake Cowley added the two point conversion. After a defensive pick by Luke Allen, returning from his year abroad also, Angus Turner added his second score of the game. The final score was Demons 54 – 0 Tarannau.
The game was an excellent opening to the Demons season, with both our offence and defence executing and ironing out mistakes that held us back in our scrimmage against SGS Filton. Despite this, there is still much to improve on with our defence conceding silly penalties throughout the game, and offensive drives being stalled by handling errors. Credit also to Tarannau who ran hard and tough all game, good luck with the rest of your season and we look forward to coming up to your place in February 2016.
Our next fixture is this Sunday 8th November against the Swansea Titans at Llandarcy Academy of Sport. A rival match, the Titans have inflicted some heartbreak on the Demons in recent years and I’m sure that will be another physical and fiercely competitive fixture.
