Women’s Hockey Scholars selected for England U21 Squad

We are delighted to announce that two of our current Women’s Hockey scholars have been selected for the GB U21 squad. England U21 Women have now gone through their selection process for this year and have chosen to include Meg Crowson and Kathryn Lane, two University of Exeter first team hockey players. In just a few weeks’ time, the girls will be travelling to Philadelphia, and will be on tour in the US from 4th-15th January.

Meg, who is in her second year studying BSc Exercise and Sport Sciences, is excited about facing new challenges on the tour: “We are currently training and preparing every week for our trip away to America in January. We are playing a 5 game test series against USA U21s under the dome at the national sports centre in Philadelphia which will be a very exciting new experience!” As for their next steps, final year BA Business and Management student Kathryn explained that “the next few months is training and preparation for the tour”.

High performance manager Charlotte Hale congratulated the girls on their achievement: “We are immensely proud of Kathryn and Meg’s continued success at an international level. Our women’s hockey programme continues to attract players of international calibre, who I am sure are inspired by Kathryn and Meg’s recent selection. They continue to be excellent role models, as sports scholars and student-athletes, both on and off the pitch. We wish them the best of luck with the GB U21 squad and in particular the tour to the United States in January”.

Hockey is one of nine focus sports at the University, and Exeter finished the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) 2014/15 season in second place for Hockey. As a University, Exeter won more BUCS points in Hockey than any other sport. Chris McInroy is the Director of Hockey and in light of their recent selection, commented “Congratulations to both Meg and Laney on their selection. They are a credit to Exeter”.

The University of Exeter Sports Scholarship Scheme is one of the most prestigious in the UK, helping the best student athletes reach their full potential. The scheme provides a comprehensive support package and is tailored to suit the needs of each individual athlete. Many of our graduating scholars have progressed to a professional level in their chosen sport and represented their respective countries on the global stage.
