First year student Emily Toy put in a fantastic performance at the most prestigious annual R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament in St Andrews coming away with the tournament title in the women’s event.
Emily shot 74 in the final round to seal a 2 shot win and finish eight-under-par ahead of reigning champion Chloe Ryan (University College Dublin) and Sinead Sexton (Stirling University) who finished joint 2nd. As well as the tournament honours Emily has also secured a start in a Ladies European Tour event later in the year.
The R&A supports student golfers financially to enable them to compete at the highest level while they are studying and currently invests over £300,000 in student and University golf, supporting 15 programmes including the University of Exeter Golf programme.
High Performance and Golf Performance Manager, Craig Townsend commented “It’s a brilliant result for Emily to win at one of the most prestigious golf events on offer for student athletes and she has done herself and Exeter proud. The support from the R&A for our High Performance golfers alongside our own Sports Scholarship Scheme is second to none and allows student athletes to compete at the highest level whilst at University”
University of Exeter Sports Scholar Emily Toy commented “I’ve really enjoyed my 1st year of University Golf and being part of the High Performance Programme at Exeter. It’s nice to put my training over the past few months into a tough competition and great to come away with the win especially with the added bonus of entry into a Ladies European Tour event, which I’m really looking forward to”
Having finished as number 1 University for Golf in BUCS 2015-2016 Exeter hopes to retain the title this year.
