Emily Toy representing England Golf in Australia
All about the green-Exeter golfer Emily Toy returns from international duties in Australia
Sports Scholar Emily Toy was selected for her first senior cap as part of a mixed squad of six players to represent England Golf on a tour to Australia in January.
The squad played in a number of prestigious events including Australian Master of the Amateurs, at Royal Melbourne, Australian Amateur at Woodland and Spring Valley golf clubs, NSW Amateur at Mona Vale and Terrey Hills golf clubs and the Avondale Amateur at Avondale.
The best of the results came for Emily in the women’s New South Wales 36 hole championship where she finished 4 under and a shot ahead of her nearest competitor to take the title.
We caught up with Emily back in Exeter as she reflected on her experiences of her first senior international tour…
1. What do you feel you gained most from your experience with England Golf in Australia?
“Representing England is a real honour. Being in Australia for a month gave me an invaluable experience, including the preparation you need to travel and an insight into the lifestyle of a tour professional. I was lucky enough to play on some of the best golf courses in the world with some of the fastest greens! I was given the opportunity to compete against some of the best amateur golfers in the world, this enabled me to develop and adapt to the differentiating conditions. I learnt a lot about my own game which I will take forward in the forthcoming season”.
2. What are your sporting goals for the rest of the year?
“My goals for this season include representing England in the European Teams in July and playing in the Home Internationals in August. In terms of results for this year, I would really like to Top 10 in the England Order of merit and in the short term, reduce putts gained to -0.8 average”.
3. If you could give one piece of an advice to a prospective student golfer looking to study at University what would it be?
“Take every opportunity that comes your way, even if it isn’t something that you would normally do. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and strive to be the best you can. Always reflect on what you have done and learn from the good days and the bad”.
Emily currently competes for the University of Exeter mixed 1st team in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and is part of the Performance Programme. Performance golfers have access to exceptional coaching and facilities including the Vic Ambler short game practice area on campus and a comprehensive support services package consisting of strength and conditioning, physiotherapy and performance athlete lifestyle support. The University Golf mixed 1st team are currently top of Premier South in BUCS and are looking ahead to their first round of the Championship knockout stages where they meet University of Nottingham 1st team in the last 16.
