University of Exeter Women's Indoor Cricket 1st team with their BUCS silver medals

Superb Silver in BUCS Indoor cricket for UoE Women’s 1st team

The University of Exeter Women’s Indoor Cricket 1st team headed to BUCS finals day at in Manchester facing Worcester, Sheffield and Nottingham in their initial group games.

Exeter started the day well against Worcester to win by 45 runs with Izzy Bunn and Amy Weir opening the batting for Exeter with a number of sixes. They finished the batting on 117-5 and went on to bowl Worcester all out for 72, securing their 1st win of the weekend.  Next up was University of Sheffield, which was a much closer encounter and once again Exeter started the batting strongly with a total of 109-4. A smart run out from Georgia Relf in the field helped Exeter see off the challenge and emerge with a 15 run victory. In their final group game against University of Nottingham Exeter bowled first and were relentless on the attack bowling Nottingham all out for 59. Once again Izzy Bunn and Amy Weir opened the batting and led the side to a convincing 6 wicket win and a place in the semi-finals.

Up against Cardiff Met Exeter won the toss and batted first finishing their innings on 102-4. In the field a quality run out from Izzy Bunn and 2 Cardiff Met wickets in 2 balls pushed Exeter to a 28 run advantage and more importantly a place in the BUCS final. Awaiting them in the final was a talented Loughborough side and despite Exeter’s best efforts and arguably some of their best cricket of the day they lost narrowly by 3 wickets. Having beat 4 of the best sides in the country convincingly on their route to the final and performing fantastically in tough conditions, with 3 games back to back from last group game, semi final and final, Exeter took home a well deserved silver medal.

Reflecting on the BUCS finals weekend Women’s Cricket Performance Coach Jack Bradbury commented “The girls were absolutely outstanding all day on Sunday. They thought on their feet, created clear plans for how they were going to play. And then went on to execute them for the entire day. Every single one of the group contributed throughout the day – from the 7 playing girls to those who travelled to support. It was very much a club effort, and they were unlucky to come up short in the final. Their performance on the day was no surprise to any of us that get to work with them during the week, and all involved are over the moon with the result”.

Captain Georgia Relf added “"As a team we are extremely pleased with BUCS silver. We showed a lot of good performances on the day and only narrowly missed out on gold after a well fought final against Loughborough. At training we work extremely hard and we are now looking forward to the outdoor season to reap our rewards and get ourselves another BUCS medal."

The University of Exeter Women’s Cricket 1st team now turn their focus towards the start of the BUCS outdoor season in April where they have been incredibly successful in recent years including four successive silver medals.
