Leadership expert to join University of Exeter Business School

Mr Allen has 30 years’ experience in the private, public and charity sectors. He is chief executive of Future Care Capital, a 70-year-old national health and care charity, as well as a trustee of Devon charity Hospiscare and the national charity Arthritis Action.

He will be joining the Business School as a Professor of Practice in the Exeter Centre for Leadership.

As part of the role he will become Director of The Exeter Leadership Partners, an initiative where organisations from different sectors come together to explore the latest in research and leadership ideas.

Mr Allen said: “I’m delighted to be joining the University of Exeter Business School and Exeter Leadership Partners. The challenges of our time that face leaders of organisations require a skillset, mindset and resilience that cannot always be taught.

“Exeter Leadership Partners and the Business School are well-placed to bring organisations together from different sectors to explore new transformational approaches to leading and learning in a complex and uncertain world.

“I bring Board and general experience from 30 years of working across the commercial, public and third sectors.

“This is an opportunity for me to work with world class colleagues from the university’s research and leadership faculties, plus cross-sector leaders – whilst also creating a mutually beneficial link with my work as a chief executive and charity trustee.”

Mr Allen specialises in organisational transformation and development, board governance and assurance, the future of work and HR.

His previous roles include CEO of the national Centre for Workforce Intelligence – which was a key private sector research body for the government.

He was also a senior civil servant at the Department of Health, a national director of Nuffield Health and a private banker at Coutts & Co.

Early in his career he qualified as a teacher and worked in state and private schools. He has also served as an officer in the British Army.

He is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a Fellow of the RSA.
