Leading agricultural economist awarded prestigious fellowship

A prestigious group of food and agricultural economists has awarded a ‚Äčfellowship to Steve McCorriston, Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Exeter Business School.

The European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) brings together agricultural economists interested in the problems of the agricultural and food industries and rural development in Europe.

Professor McCorriston joins a select group of only 20 agricultural economists considered to have made a relevant and continuous contribution to the advancement of agricultural economics in Europe.

He said: "I am delighted to be awarded this Fellowship from the European Association of Agricultural Economists. The global food security an important policy concern both nationally and globally, and economists have an important contribution to understanding the factors that drive the functioning of food sectors and with the development of appropriate and effective government policies.

Professor McCorriston’s research has informed the development of policies in the food sector and he has acted as a consultant to organisations including the OECD, the UN FAO and DEFRA. He has also been the recipient of the European Association of Agricultural Economists' prize for the Quality of Policy Contribution.

He previously co-ordinated the Transparency of Food Pricing (TRANSFOP) project, a €1m EU-wide project involving 13 universities and research institutes across 10 EU countries that aims to investigate the determinants of food prices across EU member states and the role of competition and other features of food chains on determining food prices.

He is the former Editor of the European Review of Agricultural Economics and Associate Editor of the American Journal of Agricultural Economics

He was Head of the Department of Economics at the Business School from 2005 to 2011, as well as previously serving as Director for Research

Professor McCorriston added: “I am delighted that my contribution over my career to date has been recognised by the association representing economists across Europe and worldwide who work on food and agricultural policy issues."
