Men's Cricket Indoor 1st team with their BUCS gold medals

Champion Cricketers-BUCS Gold for UoE Men’s Indoor Cricket 1st team

The University of Exeter Men’s Indoor Cricket 1st team pulled off a fantastic performance on BUCS finals day to take home the BUCS Gold and Champions title for 2020.

A tough 1st game against Cardiff Met with Exeter losing 4 wickets in quick succession meant Exeter faced an uphill battle in the field, despite setting a competitive score of 100. With the outcome of the match coming down to the very last ball of the game Exeter came through and restricted Cardiff Met to 96, to take the win. Having started the day with that performance, Exeter progressed through the rounds making it all the way to the final to face University of Kent Cricket Club.  In the final Exeter batted first, scoring 91 and went on to successfully defend it, emerging as the 2020 BUCS Indoor Cricket Champions.

Captain George Reid commented “throughout the last year and a half being part of the High Performance Cricket Programme, our success over last summer and now this winter, I believe the key change has been around the culture of the HPP squad. Within training, both in the nets and the gym, the players have all been very receptive, pushing boundaries, questioning our own preconceptions and bringing intensity to each session. It is something I hope is becoming a self-perpetuating process for all involved and something I believe was the defining factor in our victory in Cardiff at the end of February. It is also cause for a degree of optimism and excitement surrounding the summer season as we return to the National Division with the MCCUs”.

Head of Student Cricket Ruan Louw added “from my perspective, it was very pleasing to see again what the lads can achieve when they are on their game. It has been a bit up and down in the preliminary rounds, but through collective focus, effort and sheer self-belief, coupled with some strong captaincy, the team got their just rewards. We were the best team there and happily were able to prove it”.

Looking ahead to the outdoor season, Exeter play in the Men’s National league having been promoted from the Premier Division last season, where they also won the BUCS trophy outdoor title.

The University of Exeter Women’s Cricket 1st team took BUCS Silver for the 2nd year in a row after battling hard against Cardiff Met in the final and just falling short. Similarly they now turn their attention to the start of the BUCS outdoor season where they will be hoping to continue their fine performances in recent years.
