Chiefs selection for four EURFC players
Three current club members and one recent graduate selected in Exeter Chiefs match day 23 vs. Saracens.
EURFC are delighted to announce that four members of the BUCS Super Rugby side from 2019/20 have been selected as part of the Exeter Chiefs matchday 23 to face Saracens on Sunday at Allianz Park in Round 20 of the Gallagher Premiership.
The club is extremely proud to announce that Richard Capstick will be starting at blindside flanker, as he continues his senior rugby development. Off the bench, there are potential debuts for prop Matt Johnson, scrum-half and current club vice-captain Will Yarnell and winger Luke Mehson, all of whom are in line to make their senior club and premiership debuts should they take to the field.
Three of the four are still members of the university, with prop Matt Johnson having graduated at the end of last year, highlighting the success of the player pathway between Exeter University and Exeter Chiefs.
Since the restart of the Gallagher Premiership season, club and university alumni Sam Skinner (Exeter Chiefs) and Tom Lawday (Harlequins,) have been a regular part of their clubs respective matchday squad.
The selection of Capstick, Johnson, Mehson and Yarnell in the same matchday side is a major coup for the club, with the players now presented with a golden opportunity to make their mark on one of the biggest stages of all.
Prop Johnson was EURFC’s top BUCS Super Rugby try-scorer last season with 9 tries, with winger Mehson and scrum-half Yarnell scoring 8 and 6 tries respectively.
Since the restart of Premiership rugby, a large number of former and current BUCS Super Rugby players have gained professional minutes in the league, showcasing the strength of the league in providing up and coming young talent with a pathway into the professional game.
From all at EURFC, we send our warmest congratulations to Richard Capstick, Matt Johnson, Luke Mehson, Will Yarnell and the rest of the Exeter Chiefs side for the weekend.
You can catch the action on BT Sport on Sunday. Kick-off is at 4.30.
