EURL score high, receiving funding in time for the RLWC

Our University of Exeter Rugby League club have received funding from the CreatedBy RLWC2021 capital grants programme, to improve the environments where Rugby League takes place; giving people more and better opportunities to engage with the game and to get active. The funding will allow the purchase of equipment that create environments that are accessible, welcoming and build a legacy of the 2021 tournament in our university and local communities. 

In a breakthrough moment for Rugby League, the men’s, women’s, and wheelchair games will come together for the first time on the sport’s biggest stage as England hosts the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. England 2021 will be One Game. Together. As well as an amazing tournament we have been given the opportunity to do so much more, by helping to build a legacy from the event in communities across England.

Billy Franklin University of Exeter Rugby League Captain has said that “We hope the 2021 World Cup and its legacy will appeal to as many people as possible and this funding will go along well in helping us contribute with the engagement of new and returning students”.

The CreatedBy RLWC2021 Programme will be delivered in a partnership between RLWC2021, DCMS, Sport England, RFL and The National Lottery because we all recognise the benefits of supporting individuals and communities to be more active through Rugby League. 

Jon Dutton, Chief Executive, RLWC2021, said: “The CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme is focused on ensuring the next generation of rugby league players have the best possible experience and barriers to participate are removed. We are delighted to award this grant to University of Exeter's Rugby League club and look forward to seeing the results of this investment that aims to deliver real change in their community. Our thanks go to the government and The National Lottery, and its players, for supporting the CreatedBy programme.”

This funding will be a contributing factor in our Operational plans of our Physical activity and wellness strand of our new strategy, through people playing more sport and getting active in their everyday lives: Physical Wellbeing, Mental Wellbeing and Social & Community Development, this provides a great opportunity for our club to create an inclusive environment and introduce new and returning student’s to the game.
